Demand for cellphones in India, is projected to increase up to 350 million units by 2020 in contrast to an predicted 130 million units in 2011, as per an Enrst & Young report in collaboration with FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). India has been rated as the world’s 2nd largest wireless (or cellphone) market after China. This report projects that 505 million handsets will be manufactured in India by 2020. It recommends that government should establish manufacturing hubs for machinery and components that go into making cellphones. Currently, companies such as Samsung and Nokia are assembling some of their phones in India but their components are still being imported from China. This report also has statistics about the average selling price (ASP) of phones in India in 2010, which was Rs 2,300 and is estimated to rise up to Rs 2,950 by 2020.
